Do I need a letter of medical necessity for FSA or HSA reimbursement?

Not for most routine medical care. Administrators generally ask for one when an item or service is not clearly medical on its own.

Visits, prescriptions, and many common medical items are usually reimbursable with an itemized receipt. Items that can serve a general wellness or personal purpose are the ones more likely to need an LMN.

Rules vary by plan and administrator, so check with yours before you buy. If a letter is required, it should come from the clinician who is treating you.

Pending clinician sign-off. General education only, not medical, tax, or legal advice. Your plan administrator decides eligibility.
